Michigan is home to two species of flying squirrels. The northern flying squirrel resides in the northern Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula, while its close relative, the southern flying squirrel, is found mainly in the southern Lower Peninsula. These nocturnal creatures prefer mature forests, parks, and other woodland habitats.
