Have a few million in the bank and own a few towns in good locations (i.e., not scattered all over the map). And have a good army with at least a couple of parties that you can call into an army when you want to.

The reward for your efforts is the ability to lead a faction - as a faction leader you can start voting on the politics of your kingdom, declare war on other factions or accept clans to join your kingdom. Your own kingdom sucks. I've probably put about 500+ hours in Bannerlord now and can say fairly safely that making your own kingdom sucks. It's never fun to do and it's tolerable to just join a kingdom, stay in it and not do anything. These are the things that have to change to make building your kingdom fun in my opinion.

The one vassal I got, gets -relation with me every time he loses ...So i think in the end, for most players joining a existing kingdom as vassal is the righ move for the first playthrough, i havent tried that myself yet, because i read when you leave that kinddom to start your own, you lose everything to that faction on leaving, and they declair you an enemy.Clan level and money are the two key things I always focus on when deciding when I should make my own kingdom.
